Steve Levenson Lecture with Thomas Lawrence, MD, CMD -The New Era in Medical Direction: Facing the Crisis of Confluence
In the post-acute and long-term care arena there is an evolving confluence of major forces creating an environment full of challenges for the PALTC provider and Medical Director. These forces include the corporatization of LTC facilities, increasing intensity of regulatory demands, and the evolving demographic imperative of our rapidly aging culture. The role of the PALTC Medical Director in navigating these challenges is supported by the increasing acknowledgement of the role and functions of the Medical Director as reflecting in the requirements for medical director training by a significant number of larger States. The session will explore this evolving landscape with particular reference to the power afforded by medical director education and training through the recently updated, expanded, and enhanced PALTmed Core Curriculum program and the broadened opportunity for Certification (CMD).
The Levenson Lecture is funded by The Steven Levenson Medical Direction Lectureship Endowment Fund.
Anne-Marie Filkin Lecture with Amber N. Clark-Brown, MD: The Inside Scoop – A Guided View into State Survey Agencies
This session will elucidate the role of Medical Directors within long term care facilities based upon the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) regulations. This session will also give participants a valuable look into state survey agencies and the perspectives of surveyors. Through direct surveyor insight on what they wish medical directors knew and first-hand knowledge of the only embedded Medical Director within a state survey agency, participants will leave with greater understanding, confidence, and ideas to thrive in their roles.
At the completion of this session, learners will be able to:
Confidently identify and know their roles as medical directors within long term care facilities as outlined by CMS regulations.
Describe how CMS has strengthened the communication requirements between Medical Directors, other providers and the administration of a nursing center.
Discuss the perspective of state surveyors.
Analyze factors affecting long-term care capacity and quality.
Evaluate current best practices and regulations in medical direction.
Apply leadership strategies to improve patient care and facility performance.
